O'Neil, who was in her high-school years during the auditions, tried out for the third season of Canadian Idol within the early months of 2005. She made it into the top 100 because of the enthusiasm shown by judges about her performance. O'Neil had received high praise from judges. She suffered significant defeats during the top 10 week and Top 9 week of the finals. She ended up in the bottom three, as well as the second place. The judges were shocked at the result and exhorted the audience to support those with great singing talent, like Melissa. O'Neil's performances were such awe-inspiring that she didn't even make it to the lower three again. O'Neil's performance on September 7, 2005 was so impressive that judge Werner predicted the news headlines. O'Neil beat Rex Goudie to become the third Canadian Idol. O'Neil received a phone call right away from Canadian Premier Paul Martin, congratulating on her victory on Canadian Idol.
